How to Choose a Camping Tent UK: Size, Setup and Practical Features

Choosing a tent is easier when you start with the kind of camping you actually plan to do. A lightweight tent for short trips has very different priorities from a family tent that needs extra space, storage and comfort.

1. Start with sleeping capacity

Tent capacity is a useful starting point, but the number on the label does not always mean the same level of comfort for every group. If you want room for bags, clothes or wider sleeping mats, choosing a little more space can make a big difference.

2. Think about how quickly you want to set it up

Some tents prioritise fast pitching, while larger family or multi-room tents may take more time. If you regularly arrive late at a campsite or move between locations, a simpler setup can be valuable.

3. Check packed size and weight

If you are travelling by car, a larger packed tent may be manageable. If you expect to carry your tent any meaningful distance, weight and packed dimensions become much more important.

4. Look at weather protection

For UK camping, rain protection matters. Check the product information for waterproofing details, groundsheet design and how well the tent protects entrances and ventilation openings from bad weather.

5. Ventilation matters too

Good airflow helps reduce condensation and makes warmer nights more comfortable. Look for vents, mesh panels or doors that allow airflow without leaving the tent fully open.

6. Consider porch and storage space

A porch or covered entrance can be useful for boots, bags and wet gear. Larger tents may also offer separate living and sleeping areas, which can be helpful for longer trips or family camping.

7. Match the tent to the trip

A weekend campsite trip, a festival and a longer family holiday all place different demands on a tent. Choose for your most common use rather than buying features you are unlikely to need.
