A comfortable night can make a big difference to a camping trip. Choosing sleeping gear is not just about picking the thickest sleeping bag: temperature, size, packability and what you sleep on all matter.
Start with the conditions
Think about when and where you expect to camp. Summer campsite trips usually need a different sleep setup from colder spring or autumn nights. Check the temperature guidance supplied with any sleeping bag and choose gear appropriate for the conditions you realistically expect.
Check the sleeping bag size and shape
A bag should give you enough room to sleep comfortably without being excessively large for your needs. Mummy-style bags are designed to sit closer around the body, while rectangular styles can offer more room to move.
Think about pack size
If you are driving to a campsite, packed size may be less important. For hiking or trips where you carry your gear, weight and packability matter much more. Check both the packed dimensions and weight before deciding.
Don't forget what goes underneath you
Your sleeping surface affects both comfort and warmth. A sleeping mat, air bed or camping mattress adds cushioning and can help reduce heat loss to the ground. Choose something suitable for the space available in your tent.
Keep your sleep system dry
Wet sleeping gear can quickly make a trip uncomfortable. Pack sleeping bags and clothing so they remain protected from rain, damp ground and leaks. Air sleeping gear after use and make sure it is fully dry before storing it for longer periods.
Build the setup around your trip
For a simple campsite weekend, comfort may be the priority. For longer walks or compact travel, weight and packed size may matter more. Matching the sleeping bag, mat and shelter to the type of trip usually gives a better result than choosing each item in isolation.
